Morningstar 529: Looking Beyond The Tax Break

While 529 Plans offer the benefit of tax breaks in some states, it is important to look at a number of factors when considering where to start a 529 Plan.  Most direct purchase plans (plans sold by the state) have low fees, but shopping around and doing a little research is worth it.  State plans also offer different exposure to risk or to the number of choices you might have in mutual funds.  Morningstar offers a quick ranking of state plans, including a couple to avoid from Arizona and New Jersey.
